Dry Christmas
Folsom Lake
Dec. 23-24, 2013

As California slips into its third year of drought,
we took a walk out into the dry lake bed that, during a
normal winter, would be under water. Jim and Jaxon panned
a little for gold, as we were just a few miles downstream
from the gold fields that drew the '49ers to these hills
160 years ago. Ellie made fishing gear out of found items.
And Tommy ran one of the most epic sprints of his life,
charging about a quarter mile, like a thoroughbred along
the bluff while we cheered him from the river bank -- a
very nice way to celebrate his 11th birthday.
