Sun Break

Long Beach & Seal Beach
Feb. 7, 2009

There is something calm and wonderful about a crisp winter weekend at the beach. Fewer crowds leave a little breathing room, making it easier to shop, to find a bargain on white furry boots, for example, or to stretch out on an empty bench on the pier, a new beach ball as your pillow. From the beach, you can look to the north and see snow on the San Gabriel mountains, just above Pasadena, where I grew up. In the other direction, Catalina is clearly visible. In the afternoon, we may grab a cup of coffee and a recent tabloid and head off for a stroll through Belmont Shore to see what's new, to get a haircut from a barber with saucy tales from post-war Asia, or to snatch up bargains as Belmont Teachers' Supply has its final clearance sale, after a lifetime of providing us with puzzles, coloring books, paperback biographies, and colored pencils.
