Watching Venice Work

On our first morning, we had to wend our way through Venice's streets, up to the far end of the island by the train station to pay for our apartment and get some money. Along the way, we saw Venice at work -- boats picking up trash, guys tossing cases of water to each other on the quays, and even an ambulance racing through the waters by the Rialto Bridge, leaving a tremendous wake (see video below).

In one of many defensive measures against The Mighty Euro, we skipped the romantic gondola ride and instead enjoyed a traghetto -- a standing ride across the Grand Canal (another video, below).
