Em had been watching thru-hiker videos on YouTube for years,
carefully buying lightweight gear and becoming an increasingly
adept hiker and backpacker -- even though she swears the only reason
she hikes is to justify her habit of buying gear.
Then, one spring, she found herself between jobs, with enough money saved,
and no other commitments... so she decided to go for it! Off to Atlanta to
start the Appalachian Trail, a 2,200-mile walk to Mt. Katahdin in Maine.
(Some months later, in June, at a party in our Santa Rosa backyard, I was
talking with Flo about this. She recalled that when we hiked Whitney back
in August 2015, she smiled a little when Emily exclaimed, "This is so great! I'm going to
become a total outdoorsy person now!" And she was more than a little impressed --
not to mentione surprised -- that she had made good on that pledge.)
