After we had set our anchor, the boy who led us to the site pulled his red, plywood boat up alongside our boat. "You want lobster dinner?" he asked. "I can bring you lobster later tonight, when the sun goes down." We asked him how much. He looked around, counting our number. "Fifty dollars each." Fifty dollars total, we said. "No, man. This nice boat. How much you pay for a nice lobster dinner back home?" Then he tipped a canvas bag and out into his boat fell a lobster as big as a cocker spaniel, its tentacles waving gently, hoping to find some salvation, some way back to the sea. Okay, we told him. Two hundred dollars.
