Recently started volunteering with the LA Maritime Institute, which has four tall ships. They take out at-risk youth, on day sails and on multiple-day trips to Catalina and around the Channel Islands. They also host other events on the ships, to help fund the kids' programs.
The email reminding me of my upcoming Deckhand Training noted: After the dockside training, the ship will leave the dock and volunteers can test out their new skills in the harbor. Following the sail set, volunteers will have the chance to climb aloft, drive the ship, and learn knots.
Climb aloft.
Drive the ship.
Learn knots.
I think I've found my new volunteer calling.
