Bumming Around Koloa

Kauai
Feb. 11, 2014

In old Koloa town, we found the snack shop Bart had recommended, and then spotted a broken foundation over in the park where we could sit and eat.

Some chickens were mighty interested in our hamburgers.

The foundation turned out to be the remains of an old sugar mill, one of the first in Hawaii.

Nearby, there's a monument to the people who worked the sugar fields. (Each figure represents one ethnicity, but the bas-relief of the white overseers has disappeared... maybe washed away by the Rains of Retribution.)

Anyway, things are pretty peaceful here now, and it's a mellow place to hang out for lunch and ice cream.
