Nice Surprise for a History Nerd
Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration

I had been warning for months that it was coming: the sesquicentennial
of the start of the Civil War. Could we go to Charleston, South Carolina,
I asked several times, and see what they did there? Would they have a mock
artillary barrage against Fort Sumter out in the harbor? What would we do
to commemorate such a significant turning point in American history?
I never got it together enough to book a family trip out to Charleston
during the final weeks of spring term (though I may get them out there
this summer), but Jen was thoughtful enough to find me a substitute. She
spotted an ad in the paper for this commemoration at Santa Rosa's Rural
Cemetary and surprised me by driving me over there for the ceremony
and a guided tour (with costumed actors) of some of the grave sites of
Civil War nurses and veterans buried there.
