Beneath the Gallows Outside Judge Parker's Court Room
Fort Smith, Arkansas

I was reading Charles Portis' True Grit that month,
and also slightly obsessed that summer with the Coen Brothers'
2010 movie, so I made us stop in Fort Smith to see what I
could see of the story in what's left of the old town. Judge
Parker's court room and the gallows are still there, where one
of the condemned men says, looking out at the spectators before
the pull the hood over his head, "I see men out in that crowd is worse than me!"
