Riding the Dunes
Oregon Dunes

A day out from home, we found ourselves on the
Oregon coast signing away our rights to sue the
folks who would rent us little golf carts on which
we could, supposedly, fly across the sandy coastal
dunes. But nature never intended a dune buggy to
carry four riders, and we kept sinking into sand
instead of racing over it. The 19-year-olds managing
the field finally took pity on us and swapped out our
four-seater for a two-passenger model that actually
carried Ellie and me along at what seemed a brave pace
(about 25 mph). By then, Jen and Em had seen enough
and settled for a fast ride back to the garage.
