Em & I headed over to the waterfront to see the tall ships while Jen, Sue & Dee covered the boutiques and cafes.
These Great Lakes ships and sailors seemed a world away from our West Coast ships, until I started talking with crew. I mentioned to a crew member on a brigantine that I volunteered with the LA Maritime Institute, and we also have a couple of brigantines.
"Yeah, Exy and Irving," she said without pause.
Later, aboard a schooner, I mentioned to the first mate that I had volunteered as crew on Alma, a scow schooner on San Francisco Bay.
"Oh yeah, Alma," she said, casually. "You guys are advertising for a captain. I'm thinking of applying."
It's a small world of folks who sail these old tymey ships.
