Downstream

We set out in high spirits in two motorboats, racing each other
around the first bend downstream, but the old Merc gave out before
we passed Casini Ranch. So we got towed back up to the dock, shedded
some of the unnecessary gear (not the go-gurts or sandwiches, of course),
ignored the safety warnings on the Sea King and piled in for a cold ride
4 or 5 miles downstream, to Jenner, where the Russian River pours out
into the sea. Well, theoretically at least: the river was actually
blocked by a berm, over which ocean waves occasionally crashed. A current
still drifts downstream, but I'm no longer sure exactly where all that water
goes.
