Catacombs of St. Sebastian

Appian Way

Long an artistic favorite -- who can resist the vivid imagery! -- St. Sebastian shows up in paintings and on church walls throughout Europe. The colorful bas relief adorns the ceiling (I got the shot by setting my camera on the floor with a 2-second delay), showing the soldier-convert tied to a tree, where his former camarades in arms used him for target practice. Legend says that Sebastian is laid to rest here, atop miles of Christain catacombs. (Spooky tour, no photos please!)
