These are surely salad days, as most everyone at the table was either just back from somewhere (France, France, New York) or on their way to somewhere (Ukraine).

Sandy told of the time when, shortly before leaving Puerto Rico, where she had been living for a year, she took her sailboat out into a squall, capsizing it and breaking its mast ("We had to lower the price we were asking for it, of course.") Clinging to the keel of her overturned boat, wearing nothing but a string bikini, the first rescuers who came upon her were a crew of fisherman, gleaming at the prospect of rescuing a blond mermaid in string bikini.

"I was clinging there wondering which to choose, 'Rape or drown?' "
